How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (2024)

Getting to fly on a double-decker jet — especially at the very front of the plane — is a dream for many AvGeeks, myself included. But with the right stash of points and miles, booking this aspirational flight is possible without draining your savings.

This April, Etihad Airways’ iconic Airbus A380 will officially return to service between New York and Abu Dhabi after a 4-year hiatus.

This goliath of a jet can seat nearly 500 passengers across economy, business class, and first class, ranking year after year as one of the best ways to fly in comfort and style.

The airline was set to retire this massive aircraft amid the pandemic, but Etihad has fortunately scrapped plans to do so and will bring it back on this popular route soon.

When I heard the A380 was due to come back in service, I shelled out hundreds of thousands of miles to book 2 Etihad’s first class “The Apartment” seats with my friend this November. Here’s how I did it.

A380 Returning on Etihad’s New York to Abu Dhabi Service

Starting April 22, 2024, Etihad will fly the A380 on one of 2 daily nonstop services between New York (JFK) and Abu Dhabi (AUH).

“Putting the A380 on the popular New York route makes sense as we satisfy customer demand for more capacity, further growing our expanding network,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, in a statement about the service.

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (1)

Etihad will operate the other New York to Abu Dhabi route with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. For those seeking the superjumbo, here’s the timetable of this service:

  • New York (JFK) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) — 3:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. (plus 1 day)
  • Abu Dhabi (AUH) to New York (JFK) — 2:55 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

What makes Etihad’s A380 special?

Look beyond the 415 economy seats, 70 business class seats, and 9 “The Apartment” first class seats, and there’s 1 coveted seat known as “The Residence,” which is the only 3-room suite in the sky.

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (2)

Etihad’s The Residence seat is something of dreams, more akin to a private jet experience complete with butler service. This suite can accommodate up to 2 guests with a private living room, bedroom, and a private bathroom.

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (3)

However, The Residence seat costs significantly more miles to book, so I set my sights on booking Etihad’s The Apartment class.

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (4)

Still in a league of its own, Etihad’s The Apartment seats come with impressive food and drink, a nearly 7-foot bed and lounger bench, and a shower in the sky. It really doesn’t get much better than this!

How to Book Etihad First Class Flights With Points and Miles

With the A380 returning in service to the New York to Abu Dhabi route, I knew this was my chance to book these first class seats with miles.

The Etihad Guest program is the best bet for reliably finding first class seats. According to Etihad’s award chart, redemptions start at 160,000 Miles one-way for the airline’s route with the 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

If you want to book The Apartment class, you’ll redeem 200,000 Miles one-way and $544 in taxes and fees. (This is significantly reduced from the previous 220,000 Miles rate — nearly a 30% savings from Etihad’s old award chart!).

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (5)

I decided to spend the Miles for my upcoming trip to Abu Dhabi to get the dates I needed this November. For 2 passengers, that meant a grand total of 800,000 Miles round-trip and nearly $2,000 in taxes and fees.

Considering the cash cost of these tickets is nearly $19,000 apiece, I’m still getting plenty of value for my redemption. If you’ve got millions of points to burn, why not redeem them for a dream trip?

How I Earned 800,000+ Membership Rewards® Points

Booking not just 1 — but 2 seats — in Etihad’s famed The Apartment class is a lofty goal, as it requires you to earn a ginormous haul of Etihad Guest Miles.

As American Express® Membership Rewards points* transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Etihad Guest, I honed in on this program to earn the 800,000 points required for these flights.

As a business owner, I carry the powerful one-two punch combination of The Business Platinum® Card from American Express and the American Express® Business Gold Card to earn millions of points every year.

Paired with the Amex Business Gold card, I’ve got a points-earning powerhouse. This business card offers benefits, including the ability to earn 4x points on the top 2 eligible categories where your business spends the most each month, on up to $150,000 in combined purchases from these categories each calendar year, then 1x points thereafter. I consistently max these out with purchases at select U.S. media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio), and U.S. purchases made from software and cloud system providers.

That’s why having both Amex business cards can be beneficial for business owners who spend a ton of money every single year. It’s a win-win as you can maximize your expenses and reinvest into your travels. For me, that meant booking Etihad’s The Apartment class!

Even if you don’t own a business, you can mimic a similar strategy with Amex’s line-up of personal cards: The Platinum Card® from American Express and the American Express® Gold Card.

How To Transfer Amex Membership Rewards Points to Etihad Guest

Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to 20-plus airline and hotel transfer partners, including Etihad Guest. To begin the transfer process to Etihad, you’ll need to sign up for a frequent flyer account with Etihad.

Once you’ve signed up, log into your eligible American Express account. Click “Explore Rewards” and “Transfer Points” to see the entire list of participating programs. You’ll click on Etihad Guest and enter your loyalty account number, along with the exact number of points you’ll need to book the desired flight.

There’s usually a verification process involved to finalize your transfer, so make sure to have your Amex card handy to enter the 4-digit CSC code. Amex says it could take around 48 hours to complete the transfer, so confirm that your dates are available before initiating the process.

How I Booked Etihad First Class Apartment Flights With Amex Membership Rewards Points (10)

Once complete, you’ll receive an email that the transfer has been completed. In my experience, my Miles took just under 24 hours to show up in my Etihad Guest account.

Fortunately, my desired dates were still bookable via Miles, so I was able to confirm The Apartment seats in no time.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, there’s no better way to book Etihad’s iconic The Apartment class than through its own loyalty program. While it requires 200,000 Miles for first class, travelers can strategize ways to earn the rewards required for this coveted redemption.

All told, I can’t wait to experience Etihad’s The Apartment seats again, as it has been over 4 years since my last flight with the airline.
